The ultimate guide to buying your own she-shed

The poet John Donne wrote that 'No man is an island' in one of his world-famous poems about isolation. However, it is hard to imagine that John knew what it was like to be swamped with work and family obligations 24/7. If he had, he would have probably written that no (wo)man is an island except when they need to spend some time alone in a perfect little she-shed! Jokes aside, if you are desperately in need of a perfect getaway, look no further - we will discuss all of the essential things you need to know when buying your own she-shed!

The truth of the matter is that it is entirely natural to have your own personal space in which you can recollect your thoughts, do something creative, or just get away from the hustle and bustle of your day-to-day life. Most people associate holidays and vacations with me-time when they have the time and space to explore their inner lives finally. But this can be tricky. Sometimes it is simply impossible to travel anywhere (*khm* Covid-19 *khm*), or your finances may not allow you to travel every time you feel like getting away from it all.

Traveling is sometimes not an option. However, your own personalized she-shed is a perfect place to spend time on your own.

The solution to this is so close to you; it is almost ridiculous. Namely, if you have a backyard, a spare room, attic, basement, atelier... you should consider buying your own she-shed.

A she-shed? What is a she-shed exactly?

There are no strict rules about what a typical she-shed should look like. The main point of having a she-shed is to have your own little shrine that will accommodate all of your free-time activities, a place where you can unleash your creativity, where you can exercise, meditate, do yoga, sing, dance, throw parties, cinema nights, book club meetings, …

If you still haven’t got a clear picture of what it may look like, think of it as a pandan to a man cave. A space where you can unwind whenever you want, in a surrounding that can be as feminine, as manly, as clean, dirty, stylish, or purposeful as you want it to be! No imposed societal roles here!

What do she-sheds usually look like?

Usually, she-sheds are outbuilding structures (i.e., small houses) at a distance from the place you live in because such an arrangement allows you to separate your private time and regular life. Of course, this is not to say that you are not allowed to make a she-shed in your attic or basement. Everything is permitted, but the prototypical she-shed is located in the backyard.

If you have an old barn or shed in your backyard, there is no reason why you shouldn’t repurpose and make your own she-shed.

Most she-sheds are made by women who are moving in with their partner to a new home. If you are seriously planning to make this big step, you will probably be aware that your living and working dynamic will change from the ground up. That is where the she-shed comes in - functional relationships are built on top of calm and collected individuals who have the freedom to explore themselves alongside working on the relationship with their significant other.

Designing your she-shed

Be clear about why you are building your own she-shed

So, every she-shed is a reflection of the she-shed owner’s personality. Therefore, you should plan the size and design of the structure based on what the primary purpose of your she-shed will be. For instance, consider constructing a small bathroom and storage room if you need extra space.Depending on whether you will use your space for entertainment, gardening, painting or as a reading nook, you should decorate it accordingly.

Women often build she-sheds to explore the creative side of their personality.

However, you do not want to go overboard with furniture and other household items because then you may be on the way to making just another storage room instead of a she-shed. The point is to think about what you want to do in there and stick to it.

Be realistic

Luckily, conspicuous consumption is something that remains outside of your she-sed. The she-shed does not have to be spectacularly well-designed, especially if you are short on cash. That's merely missing the point - the point is to relax and get away from the world, not obsess over what people will think about your interior design. Having your own personal space is a luxury in itself, but a luxury unlike other luxuries; it is unpretentious and gratifying. You really do not have to prove yourself to anybody and splurge a lot of money on design, furniture, or relocation of those essential items you want to have in the she-shed.

You could paint the she-shed on your own or with your partner and kids. Ask your friends and family members if they have some old, but functional furniture that you can take and recycle. And call Big Man's Moving Company if you need help with moving any old or new furniture or appliances that you want to have in your perfect little she-shed.

Set the mood

A she-shed is not a home unless you give it your personal touch. So, start with the basics–paintwork. moving in furniture and other items, deep cleanse, etc. Then you should begin to add some color theme, or artwork of your choosing to cheer yourself up every time you come to your humble abode.

Gradually, you will see your former barn or grass plot turn into a lovely, inviting space where you will spend many hours, so enjoy every moment you spend building your own she-shed.
