Nostalgia : A Quick Visit to Jakarta Old Town Area (2)

This time, I’ll share a little about things that we saw inside the Fatahillah Museum. We only had 30 minutes, so it’s just a quick tour. I can’t give a good description here as I have no chance to take notes.

Instead, I’ll quote a brief from an article that described inside the Fatahillah Museum:

As a museum, it provides the historical background of Jakarta. According to the records of The Culture and Museums Department of Jakarta, this museum has 23,500 collections.

In the 1st floor we can discover lots of collections of antiquities and porcelains, VOC symbol statue, archeological discovery from prehistorically era, earthenware vessels, statues, and ancient inscription. There are also many display objects such as traditional Betawi kitchen, cigarette stall, becak (pedicab), meatballs cart, etc., which are symbolize the Betawi culture. Betawi is ethnic culture of Jakarta that was born and bred for generations in Jakarta for hundred of years.
In the 2nd floor, there are many of antique furniture used by the Netherland leaders of Batavia. In this floor we can find large windows facing to the lawn. Beside one of these windows there is a written plate told that through these windows, the leaders of Netherland Government gave their orders to execute criminals by hang in the middle of the square.
There are many rooms inside this museum; we didn’t enter them all. One of my favorite spots inside the museum is the room with the very wide hanging painting on the wall (3x10 m). This art work was created by S.Sudjojono to describe the battle between Sultan Agung (the third King of Mataram kingdom) and J.P. Coen (VOC Governor-General).

Climbing Wall

A climbing wall is an unnaturally builded wall with grips for hands and feet, usually used for indoor climbing, but sometimes located outdoors as well. Around the Sempur Field Bogor (West Java, Indonesia), you can find the out door climbing walls. When I visited Sempur Field last Saturday afternoon, I saw several young people were practicing- climbing a rock-textured wall.

The idea of the artificial climbing wall began in the UK. The first wall was constructed in 1964 at Leeds University by Don Robinson, a lecturer in Physical Education and founder of DR Climbing Walls, by adding pieces of rock into a corridor wall.

Gym climbing is becoming an increasingly popular urban sport and offers a lot of people with the chance to try some parts of the sport of rock climbing. Bouldering gyms focus on bouldering rather than roped climbing (data source: Wikipedia).

Don’t ask me to try this extreme but safe sport, since I still have my high sickness. Are you brave and strong enough to do this kind of sport?

Give the Best Care to Your Aging Parents

Do you have aging parents? My mother has passed away in 1999. My father is 75 years old now. I’m so grateful that my father is a healthy old man. I and my husband have decided to accompany my father and live together in the same house until now. I’m a stay at home wife, so I have enough time and energy to accompany and take care of my father. I don’t face any trouble since he is an active, healthy and independent person.

That’s my condition. But how if you face the totally different situation? Let’s say that you have your aging mother and she is live alone at home since you live very far from her. Every day, you are worry for her safety and health as there’s nobody who can help if something bad happens to your old mother. You feel that you must take care of your mother, but the far distance makes you difficult to look after your mother by yourself.

Well, it’s the right time to consider placing your mother in a senior care facility. It could be the best solution to your difficult situation. But of course, choosing
A Place for Mom that really suits with your mother’s condition isn’t an easy job.
First, you should realize that there are different types of senior care facilities; such as smaller facilities (less than 10 persons), larger facilities that offer private rooms and big common areas for activities and meals, and large complexes that provide various care levels and specifically planned to offer life-time care in one community. The third type facilities are the most costly choice.

You should also know that there are three levels of care that offered by a senior care facility: continuing care retirement communities, assisted living facilities and skilled nursing facilities that offer 24-hour care. Knowing your mother’s needs will help you to evaluate and then choose the right senior care facility.

Before choosing any senior care facility, make sure that you have checked the offered programs and regulations, the comfort and safety of the whole area, and also the finest care and assistance of the people in the facility. Female Vegetable Vendor

You can’t see vegetable female vendors in my city (Bogor, West Java) or neighborhood. In Bogor, all vegetable vendors are men and most of them are using carts to bring and display their merchandise. When I go shopping in a vegetable market, I also see most sellers are men.

Female vegetable vendor is a common view in my husband’s home town Bumiayu (Central Java, Indonesia). There are several of them. My husband has captured one female vendor. This woman brought her merchandise – fresh vegetable- with a plaited basket that placed on her back. Her two hands were full of other merchandise. A strong woman and a hard worker!

Sky Watch: the Plant Tower

We (I and my husband) visited Taman Bunga Nusantara (Nusantara Flower Park) Cipanas (West Java, Indonesia) last Saturday. The weather that day was changing all day. We reached the park at 07.30 am. It was a bright morning. But at 11.00 am until 1.00 pm, the rain was falling and the park was surrounded by the dark grey sky. Until we leaved the park at 2.30 pm, the sky was still not yet bright again, though the rain has stopped.

Inside Nusantara Flower Park, there are lots of beautiful things that you can see. This plant tower is only one of them.

Nostalgia : A Quick Visit to Jakarta Old Town Area

Let me take you to a brief tour inside Jakarta old town area. Two weeks ago, we visit this area for the first time. It’s located near Jakarta Kota train station. Though it’s only a quick visit, I really enjoy it.

Entering the old town area, there is a wide square used as a plaza in colonial era. In the middle of the square, there’s antique fountain water. I saw the fountain is dysfunction and dirty. Sigh. I can say that all things in this area aren’t kept well. The lack of fund is always become the main reason.

When I visited this place, the plaza was full of people. You can rent old bikes to wandering around the plaza. There are several old buildings around the plaza, such as a post office and some museums. We only had short time as we must catch the train, so, we just entered the most famous museum there, Museum Sejarah Jakarta (Jakarta History Museum) that it’s more known as Fatahillah Museum.

It turned out that the museum will close at 3.00 pm every day. We had just 30 minutes. Pay the very cheap ticket (Rp 2000,-), you can walk around the museum.

Outside The Fatahillah Museum

In the front of the museum building, there is a wide square that I mentioned before. At the both side of the entry door, there are 2 cannons which stand across the cobblestone square.

On the back yard, there is a souvenir shop. You can see the famous “Si Jagur” cannon, a 16th century Portuguese cannon. I’ve ever heard that “Si Jagur” is believed as a sacred thing, but I saw some visitors didn’t treat the cannon with respect. They rode the cannon like you’re riding a horse. Across “Si Jagur”, there is the Hermes God statue which used to be placed on Harmoni Bridge. I don’t know why it must be moved.

Short History
At 17th century, this area was a center of Batavia City (later become Jakarta). It is a capital city of Netherland Indies Government at colonial era, an era of Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC), a trading company from Netherland.

This 2 floors colonial style building was built on January 1707. At that time, this building was used as a Stadhuis (City Hall) for Netherland Indies Government. As a government building at colonial era, there were offices; court chamber; and underground prisons in it.

Here come the scary spots. There are 5 units of underground prison cell in this building to jail thieves, robbers, murderers, rebels, and desertion military officers. Made from concrete wall with iron bars as its door, it’s 8 x 3 meters wide without any proper ventilation beside the door. You can’t breathe well inside! There are many iron balls used to chain prisoners ankle in these cells with 100 kgs weight and volley ball size.

Every cell commonly filled to 80 prisoners. Can you imagine their suffering? Inside the cell, I felt so scare, this dark and narrow cell makes you feel so uncomfortable!

On March 30, 1974, Jakarta Governor, Ali Sadikin, launched this building as a museum and opened to public. I really like seeing the building architecture. It’s a pity that the museum building hasn’t yet obtained good maintenance. You still can see broken things here and there.

I think visitors are willing to pay more for the entry ticket; as long the added fund will be used properly to maintain the museum and the whole area. We must keep well this treasure, because I want to take my grandchildren to visit this area one day…

Well, I’ll share things inside the museum in another Nostalgia post. Until next time!

Bajaj in Jakarta

These three-wheeled vehicles aren’t available in my city, Bogor (West Java, Indonesia). But in Jakarta (the capital city of Indonesia), Bajaj have been popular since long time ago (1960-1970). Some old Bajaj are still operating, though they have already looked decrepit, and have a smoky and noisy muffler.

Since their smoky muffler can add air pollution, the local government has started to change the smoky Bajaj into the environment-friendly Bajaj that use gas and four-wheeled new Bajaj that called ‘Kancil’. But since ‘Kancil’ are expensive for most Bajaj owners, you can only see a few ‘Kancil’ in Jakarta.

I captured these Bajaj around the Jakarta Kota train station. I don’t see a four-wheeled Kancil there, that’s why I can’t share it to you. Of course Bajaj can’t give you a comfortable ride; but you can enjoy different sensation: noisy and shaky, hahaha… You must bargain the price with the driver. If you’re good at bargaining, you’ll get the best price. If you visit Jakarta, you should try this: sitting and shaking inside the Bajaj!

Pink Daisy Flowers

Last Sunday, we’re eating out in a restaurant. These daisies were put in a vase on every table. It’s a simple way, but it really can give the beauty and good mood to you.

Daisies are native to north and central Europe. Daisy word means literally ‘day’s eye’; as daisies open at dawn, when the day is just beginning. Their simple but sophisticated look make daisies are popular for gifting, decorating and growing in gardens.
