Oak Remains the Material King of Furniture

For centuries, master craftsmen have been using oak as a preferred material because of its longstanding reputation for being hardwearing. As strong as an oak so why wouldn't you want that reliability from your furniture? This article looks at the benefits of using this majestic material at home.

Interiors
Being so hardwearing, oak is perfect to lay on the floor in high-traffic areas of your home. There are options to have a hardwood layer on laminates if a solid wood option is too costly, although real hard wood does look and feel better. Historically, oak panels were used on walls, too, often with intricate decorations.

Ideal For Busy Homes
Oak furniture is nothing if not solid. The very nature of the wood means that anything built from it is built to last. It is chunky and dependable, which makes it perfect as a choice for homes with lots of people, either residents or guests. A dining room table and chairs is easily cleaned and will not date. Oak is equally at home in the kitchen, office or bedroom, where it is particularly suited to beds, which carry the full body weight all night. Consider what you need from the furniture before you begin shopping.

Easy Upkeep
There is little to do by way of maintenance once you have bought your oak furniture as it keeps on giving. A little dust and polish, or a gentle wipe with a damp cloth, is all you will need to do. In case of a scratch, solid oak furniture can just be sanded and made as good as new.

A Design Classic
The colour of oak warms up any room and it is versatile enough to complement many different interior schemes, both modern and traditional. Despite oak furniture generally being quite chunky in design, it can still bring a clean, sophisticated look to your scheme.

What To Look For
Once you have decided that oak is for you, make sure you check your furniture for a few things before you buy:
- Ensure the wood is solid and not just a veneer
- Admire the craftsmanship
- Check that any joints are authentic. They will last longer rather than glued
- Make sure there are no gaps in the joints

Technically, oak is an excellent choice for furniture, irrespective of its aesthetic qualities. Tannins present in the wood's make-up make it durable and resistant to many fungi and insects, not to mention water.

It might seem like a large initial investment to buy oak furniture and the sum is likely to be a large percentage of your decorating budget, but over the years to come, you will get your money's worth. It is excellent value for money. Consider how many years you will be using the furniture and divide the initial cost by the years you will use it and you will find the sum more palatable! A firm such as Furniture Plus Online will give a good price to start you off and by buying quality furniture initially, you will not need to replace it through daily wear and tear.

Sky Watch: Skies that Seen through Hospital Room’s Window

Nice to join Sky Watch meme again.
I was hospitalized for almost a week; I got back home last Tuesday.

Though I was lying in a hospital bed, I’m still a sky watcher. All photos were captured in the last two days at the hospital when I was already able to get down from the bed.

Take a Glass of House Style and See the Light

We are always looking at ways to improve our homes and add a touch of the personal to really make it our own. Why not try something a little out of the ordinary and use glass to create a feature and not the sort you drink from? This article gives some suggestions.

Let There Be Light

Glass has long been used for windows, to let natural light into a room. Having glass further inside the room, as a room divider, for example, allows light to travel a greater distance. Using coloured or textured glass will create added interest by creating interesting effects as the light hits it and might even be different at different times of the day or year, depending on the sun's position.

Make A Bold Statement

In the same way as one might hang a painting as a focal point in a room, hanging decorative glass panels can make a statement. There are 'off the shelf' options available, with pictures or graphic designs to suit most tastes. Alternatively, have a piece custom made to suit your personality and you will create a truly unique style statement for your home. Have a traditional framed picture size, or push the boat out and cover a whole wall! The limit is only as far as your imagination will go.

Where To Use Glass

The reflective qualities of glass make it a great option in small spaces, or rooms where you want a hi-gloss finish to allow easy cleaning. A kitchen is a great example where toughened glass can be used to great decorative effect   it often looks like marble but at a fraction of the cost! Some examples:

        Cabinet doors

        Worktops

        Splash backs

One Door Opens

Using glass in interior doors is a functional, practical way of allowing light in creating an illusion of more space, without being as adventurous as a wall-sized panel. An en-suite bathroom is a good example of how one might be used and clever technology can even give you privacy glass for those times when you just want to be alone! Frosted glass is another option.

There are many benefits of glass over other materials for interiors, including:

        Hard-wearing

        Durable

        Water-proof

        Good insulation properties

For a less permanent option using glass, try incorporating it into some furniture; a desk or coffee table, perhaps, even a bookcase. The effect is very modern, especially if teamed with chrome or leather, but by adding decorative glass panels to your piece, you can create furniture as unique as you are.

It is costly, however, compared to other materials. If you are looking at using a lot in your home, particularly in a single project, try to see the bigger picture: consider it as an investment. If you do not intend to decorate again for five years, ten years, even fifteen or more, the cost per year will decrease considerably and does not look like such a scary number! Alternatively, start small. Check Dream Glass Group for decorative glass panels and go from there. A smaller panel could become a family heirloom. Whatever you decide, enjoy your glass.
